Day 43 – direct democracy

I’m sticking to the baby-related “firsts” but things are getting a bit more serious now.

Today, I filed a petition with the German parliament for the first time. It’s quite a simple process, you can do it online and only need to summarize what you are asking for and write a brief reasoning.

What I am petitioning for is a slight change to the law on parental leave which would mean parents start back at work not on their child’s first birthday but the day after. If the petitions committee considers it formally correct, it will be published for anybody to sign it. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see now. How exciting!
