Day 188 – a home far away from home

As I said, we’re on holiday now. Like so many times before, we’ve come to Crete. I love this place with all my heart and while I enjoy travelling to new places, I also couldn’t live without coming back here every so often. This year is super special, of course, as it’s the first time I’ve brought F. to this gorgeous island that is like a second home to me.

After introducing him to many friends, feeding him tomatoes so ripe he couldn’t get enough and playing ball with him until he was in stitches with laughter, it was time for another highlight: the first time I took him to the beach and into the sea!

I’m sure you know these questions where you have to pick one: Chocolate or vanilla? Mountains or sea? Cats or dogs?

Although I grew up by the mountains and need to see them on a regular basis, too, the sea just has an effect on me nothing else has. When I sit staring out at the blue water that only ends when it meets the blue sky in the distance, I feel so calm and peaceful. Where other people need to meditate, I just need to stare at the sea.

So I’ve been looking forward to introducing my little man to this for weeks now. He looked at the waves in awe, loved the sand and pebbles and clung on to me like a scared crab when we slowly went into the water. After a while, he started enjoying it though. We just sat in the shallow water for ages, cuddling and looking around. What a beautiful, emotional experience. I can’t wait for many more summers on the beach with him, building sand castles, digging holes, playing ball and eating ice cream.
